What Went Down at AEW Revolution 2022?

AEW Revolution 2022

AEW Revolution 2022 took place on 6th March 2022 and as always AEW over-delivered at their first pay-per-view of the year. At this year’s event, we got to see a ladder match and a dog collar match along with two women’s matches on the main card and the culmination/continuation of a number of storylines.

The Buy-In

The Buy-In as always over-delivered with a hard-hitting grudge match between Kris Statlander and Legit Leyla Hirsh.

Kenny Omega’s music hits making the whole crowd and even myself get excited. But it wasn’t Omega, it is his advisor Don Callis, who cuts a promo in the ring about how the fans have sucked the life out of his friend. This is a promo that needs to be watched and is available for free via YouTube and Fite.TV. We all know that Callis litters his promos with hints and teases and this one is no different.

QT Marshall faces off against the sensation HOOK in the culmination of a feud that started after his in-ring debut. This is the longest match that HOOK has had, and it is his best to date. QT Marshall is lowkey one of the best wrestlers on the roster and seems to be the first boss you need to defeat on your way to stardom, and HOOK is well on his way there.

The last match on the Buy-In is the House of Black going against PAC and Penta of Death Triangle and Erik Redbeard. This feud has been multi-layered with many different moving parts, this could be one of AEW’s crowning achievements with the combination of mysticism and its real-world consequences. This feud isn’t gimmicky at all it feels gritty and real, and I can’t wait for the next chapter.

AEW Revolution 2022

Eddie Kingston faces off against Chris Jericho in the opening match on the main card, and what a way to start the night off. Eddie Kingston is a personal favorite of mine and seeing him and Jericho go one on one in such a vicious and high-octane match made my little heart happy. This match proves to everyone that might have doubted Kingston or have said that Jericho is washed up and old, wrong. Both men can go in the ring and always give us some of the best feuds in the industry.

The next match is for the AEW Tag Team Championships and as always, we get to see why this company has one of the best Tag-team Divisions in the whole industry. Despite the fact that this match is all about the deterioration of the relationship between The Young Bucks and ReDragon the real star is yet again Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus. The tag champs have defended their championships four times before this match, and this proves why this team deserves to hold the gold. Jungle Boy is one of the most popular young stars in AEW, as one of the four pillars of the company and this is another star-making performance, it is only a matter of time before he holds a singles title within the company.

For all those who doubted having three big hosses in a ladder match, you are about to eat your words. Gone are the days of huge behemoths plodding around the ring, we are in a new era of big guys who are athletic and quick and here we get to see three variations of this in Keith Lee, Wardlow, and Powerhouse Hobbs. Along with these guys we have the ladder match veteran of Cristian Cage, the comedy chops of Orange Cassidy, who we know can go inside the squared circle, and Ricky Starks who is a natural all-rounder. This match has everything including some real comedy and inventive spots in order to grab that brass ring and on top of that we got the correct winner.

Swerve Strickland signed his contract live and it was a very emotional moment. He has been one of the best and most exciting athletes in wrestling for the last 5 years. I wonder who he will face off against next?

Swerve Strickland

Jade Cargill dressed as her namesake from Mortal Combat while Tay Conti put on her war paint and looked like a Latino goddess accompanied by Anna Jay and Negative 1. The match was a barn burner and possibly the sleeper hit of the whole show. Conti has come on leaps and bounds since debuting in AEW and is a clear fan favorite, I’ve been a fan since her time in NXT. Jade Cargill has been working alongside Bryan Danielson and it shows, her work is substantially cleaner with more of a focus on submission moves and this is allowing her to become a more well-rounded performer.

The next two matches are great but really suffer from coming after half a card of high-quality matches. My opinion might change once I’ve rewatched them and my ratings might go up but for right now this is how I feel. First up is MJF and CM Punk in a dog collar match. The match is great and bloody while being everything you want out of this kind of match. It has a lot to live up to and comes close to Cody Vs Brodie Lee but doesn’t quite hit those heights. But it doesn’t need to, this is a completely different kind of story being told here and at least we got to explore MJF’s villain origin story.

CM Punk

In the long-awaited follow-up to their lights-out match last year, Britt Baker and Thunder Rosa face off for the AEW Women’s Championship. The question is does it live up to the hype? It’s a fantastic women’s match with loads of history and the crowd is invested but it isn’t in the same league as their lights-out match, but how do you compare the two, you can’t. It’s might not be five stars but it’s close.

Jon Moxley Vs Bryan Danielson is a masterclass in technical wrestling and a brawling style. It’s hard to truly put into words how incredible this match was but it needs to be seen to be believed. The two men brought everything to one another and Mox got his wish, bleeding alongside Danielson inside an AEW ring. The two men continued fighting after Moxley pinned Danielson to win the match, before the legend William Regal makes his AEW debut. Like the father we all want he comes out to the ring to collect his boys like a vexed parent who has had enough of his sons fighting. What does this mean for the rest of the roster?

The Tornado Trios match is exactly what we needed after that fight. It’s a great buffer between Moxley and Danielson and the AEW World Championship match, with it being fun and easy viewing. It has lots of great spots, weapons and some very talented guys working inside and outside of the ring. Standouts are the younger guys in this match while veterans like Matt Hardy and Sting help anchor the action. When you deal with the HFO everyone will get involved including The Butcher and The Blade. Sting rolls back the years by putting Andrade El Idolo through several tables which gets the crowd going.

The Main event of the night was a barn burner of a match which included many different layers. The crowd where also hugely behind this championship bout straight from the off, chanting “Let’s Go Adam”, I’m still unsure of which Adam they were chanting for, but it was amusing. Despite his best-efforts Adam Cole couldn’t put the Hangman away, even with interference from ReDragon, who were soon disposed of by The Dark Order. This was another fantastic title defence from Hangman Adam Page, establishing himself as a champion not to be messed with.
