The Story of Cinderella: Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper, is a folk tale with thousands of variants throughout the world. The protagonist is a young woman living in terrible circumstances that are suddenly changed via magic or a strange event. The story of Rhodopis is a Greek tale dating back to sometime between around 7 BC and AD 23, about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt, which is usually considered to be the earliest known variant of the Cinderella story.
The first literary European version of the story was published in Italy by Giambattista Basile in his Pentamerone in 1634; the version that is now most widely known in the English-speaking world was published in French by Charles Perrault in 1697. Another version was later published by the Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection Grimms’ Fairy Tales in 1812. The Grimm Brothers versions are normally more gruesome in nature but are where a lot of newer interpretations steam from.
Cinderella Pin-Up Project
In a project I did a few years back, I say a few years but it’s been a decade, where I decided to take fairy tales and modernize them for a personal project. This is something I have always enjoyed, combining my love of literature or film with fashion and art to create something that is truly my own.
I wanted to do something a little more fun, but for it to still be recognizable as the story of Cinderella, or at least the modern telling of it. The pin-up style was something else I wanted to explore and my choice of model enhanced the style and brought the narrative to the forefront.
a huge thank you to Kim Lemon, for modeling
